John McCarthy (4. September 1927 – 24. Oktober 2011) war ein US-amerikanischer Informatiker und eine der zentralen Figuren der frühen KI-Forschung. Bekannt wurde er u. a. dadurch, dass er den Begriff „Artificial Intelligence“ im Umfeld des Dartmouth-Projekts etablierte und den Dartmouth-Workshop 1956 organisierte, der häufig als Startpunkt der KI als Forschungsfeld beschrieben wird.
McCarthy entwickelte außerdem die Programmiersprache LISP (entwickelt ab 1958; Veröffentlichung u. a. 1960) und war später u. a. Gründungsdirektor des Stanford Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (SAIL).
Warum bekannt – Beiträge & Meilensteine #
- Dartmouth Summer Research Project on Artificial Intelligence (Sommer 1956): McCarthy organisierte das initiale Treffen; das Projekt gilt weithin als „Geburtsmoment“ des KI-Felds.
- Dartmouth-Proposal (31. Aug. 1955): Das Proposal (McCarthy, Minsky, Rochester, Shannon) ist eng damit verbunden, dass der Begriff „Artificial Intelligence“ geprägt/etabliert wurde.
- LISP (ab 1958; Paper 1960): McCarthy beschreibt LISP und die zugrunde liegende formale Basis in „Recursive Functions of Symbolic Expressions… (1960)“.
- Time-Sharing & „Computing als Dienst“: McCarthys Beiträge zu Time-Sharing und der Idee von Rechenleistung als Dienst werden u. a. in offiziellen Award-Texten hervorgehoben.
- SAIL (Stanford AI Lab): 1965 wurde er laut Computer History Museum der Gründungsdirektor von SAIL.
